Meta operates the Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads social platforms used by more than three billion people each month. Founded as Facebook in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, the company rebranded to Meta in 2021 to signal a long-term bet on the "metaverse" — virtual and augmented reality experiences and the hardware to access them. It is one of the two largest digital advertising companies in the world (the other is Google) and earns the vast majority of revenue from ads on its social apps. Meta's Reality Labs division builds the Quest VR headsets, Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and the Llama family of open-weight AI models.
